If you are a fan of craft beer, you are probably excited about the surge in small microbreweries that this country has experienced during the recent decade. Almost every community has at least one quality small brewer within its city limits, and no one establishment or beer is exactly like another. However, if you really like craft beer, you may be ready to take the next step and begin brewing your own beer at home. Getting started is fairly easy; most cities and medium sized towns have at least one retailer that supplies the needs of home brewers. You also might check the course listings of your local community college to see if classes are offered in home brewing techniques.

Most people who begin making their own beer at home turn the activity into an enjoyable lifelong hobby. Drinking the results of your own creativity and labor is something that you will find to be deeply satisfying.

New York has an endless number of bars to choose from. Some specialize in cocktails, others in wine, but this article will discuss bars that offer delicious draft beers on tap for your liking. This is just a small subset so be sure to experiment. In midtown, one bar to consider is BXL on 43rd and Broadway, which offers a variety of Belgium Beers on tap. Belgium beers are amongst the world’s finest and many of the favorite styles including Belgium dubbels, lambics, and wit beers are all offered. The whole story can be found at http://blog.timesunion.com/glutenfree/gluten-free-draft-beer-yes-please/637/ Further downtown another bar with an excellent draft bar menu is The Peculiar Pub which specializes in, you guessed it, off-kilter beers. The varieties in this bar are endless and are not limited to any one specific style. Further downtown, McSorleys offers the same beers it has for over 100 years. McSorley’s is the oldest bar in New York and offers its own brew of beer. Up until recently, it was a men’s only bar but it has now opened it’s door to women as well. New York is known as a big beer town and luckily there are a number of bars in which you can purchase delicious draft beers to suit your tastes. Drink up!

Ale and Lager are two different types of beer categories. Although beer is made from similar ingredients, the different categories are derived from the different methods used to process the beer, additional ingredients and time and temperature of the brewing barrels.

The first aspect of brewing the differences in an Ale or Lager is the process of how the yeast is fermented. The top-fermenting method is how an Ale is formed, while the bottom-fermenting method is how Lagers are formed. The top-fermenting method involves the yeast rising to the top of the barrel and the bottom-fermenting method allows the ingredients to ferment on the bottom of the brewing barrel over a longer period of time.I was looking for more information and found it here.

Secondly, the temperature when brewing Lager is to be kept around 46 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit, while an Ale is to be brewed at a warmer temperature upwards of 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The colder temperature of the Lager brewing process creates a longer maturity date, although the longer maturity time manifests a crisper and milder taste.

The last aspect of the differences between Ales and Lagers is that an Ale typically involves extra amounts of hop, barley or other ingredients to make a more bitter and malty flavor. Whether an Ale or Lager is chosen, it’s sure to satisfy. What’s 1 more click? Your boss isn’t watching… Beer pairings

Beer tastings are easy and fun to host, and generally draw a larger crowd than your general, run of the mill “party.” If your tasting is well-planned, you can expect a safe and fun-filled evening.

Invitations

Try to give your invitees at least two weeks notice of your event. This gives parents adequate time to line up babysitters, and also gives your guests time to plan for transportation. Be sure to recommend that your guests designate a driver or use public transportation to and from your event. Be proactive about the safety of your friends!

Also, describe how many beers you plan on tasting in your event, and include information on what types or specific brands of beer you will be tasting to get people excited.

Shopping

Depending on the focus of your tasting, you may want to taste 2-3 brands of up to 5 different categories of beer, or you may decide to offer a large variety of beers in the same category. For example, you may decide to offer 15 different stouts during a winter tasting.

Offering this great a variety of beers is not as expensive as you might think. You can always buy one bomber-sized beer of each kind, or can even visit a liquor warehouse that sells single beers. For a small group, buy one small beer of each kind, or for a larger group buy a bomber or buy two beers of each type. Try to select rare and seasonal beers to add to the fun.

The Event

In general, your beers should be tasted in order from least to most strong-tasting. Don’t obsess too much over the order, but in general your beers should be served in groups within their own categories (pale ales with pale ales, reds with reds, stouts with stouts) and should go from lightest to darkest. The only exception to the color rule might be India Pale Ales, while are often served near the end because of their strong hoppy taste. The reason for this deliberate ordering is so the drinkers’ palates aren’t influenced too much by the lingering aftertaste of the last beer tasted.

Serve 1-2 ounces of each beer, and serve snacks in between beer sets. For example, sample 2-4 pale ales, then serve some hot pretzels. Then, move on to taste 2-4 brown ales, etc. If you have a decent budget for your tasting, invest in some small tasting glasses, which hold up to four ounces and look like miniature brandy snifters. Or, if your budget is smaller, serve each beer in a small, clear plastic cup.

Because you will be serving food, pouring small amounts at a time, and announcing each beer in between tastes, the amount of beer consumed is naturally regulated, which means no one is likely to get too drunk. It also means that your guests will constantly have something to do and talk about, making for a fun and conversational event.
